Privileged access governance (PIM & JIT)

How Fortified ID can support privileged access governance.

Privileged access carries higher risk and needs to be managed with clear controls. Privileged access governance helps the organization reduce permanent administrator rights, introduce additional review and use time-limited activation when relevant.

Permanent administrative entitlements represent a significant security risk. Users often retain elevated rights longer than necessary, increasing the impact of mistakes, insider threats or compromised accounts.

Many organizations therefore want to reduce the number of permanent administrators and instead grant privileged access only when it is needed. This is often described as Privileged Identity Management (PIM) or Just-In-Time (JIT) Access, but privileged access governance does not always need to be time-limited. In some scenarios, it is instead about stronger control, additional verification, clearer responsibility and better traceability around existing privileged rights.

Organizations therefore need to manage elevated rights as a controlled process. This can include ensuring that:

  • administrative entitlements are used only when needed
  • access is activated for a limited time
  • elevated rights are automatically removed when the work is complete
  • permanent privileged rights are reviewed and followed up
  • activation of privileged access can be reviewed and traced
  • higher security levels are used for sensitive administrative actions

The result is reduced risk, clearer responsibility and better control over privileged identities and entitlements.

Fortified ID Control can be used to request, activate and revoke privileged entitlements. Forms can give administrators a controlled way to request or activate elevated rights, while Approval Flows can support self-activation, approval or other processes depending on organizational requirements.

Privileged group memberships and roles can be activated for a limited time and revoked when the validity period expires. Schedules can be used for automatic revocation, and Business Rules can apply different rules depending on user, role or resource.

Reporting and Auditing can provide evidence for following up activations, decisions and removed privileged entitlements.

Fortified ID Access can complement the process by requiring strong authentication before privileged access is activated. Step-up authentication can be used when higher security levels are required for particularly sensitive administrative functions.

  • Temporary activation of administrative group memberships and roles
  • Administrators who need elevated rights for troubleshooting, maintenance or change work
  • Privileged groups that should only be active during a limited time window
  • Self-activation of administrative entitlements with automatic revocation after a defined period
  • Activation of privileged access that requires strong authentication or additional verification
